Interesting month - it started off with more snow than I have ever known in Ireland. I needed to travel to the US for the middle two weeks - first to see my boss, then for a conference. I was travelling out on a Sunday morning, and as I was due to board it looked fine, so texted home to say "no snow here!" But as I sat down on the plane it started to blizzard again, giving me a tense wait to see if we would take off or not. We did eventually, after de-icing, which I grumbled about, but a few days later there was a plane crash in Buffalo, caused they think by ice on the wings!
I was surprised to find the weather in Connecticut in February milder than in Dublin. A very useful week in Rocky Hill, and very well entertained by my colleagues - highlight being an oyster restaurant with 10 different types of oyster - I tried them all. They were all good, but some were delicious.
My boss, a jazz fan gave me these to try:
My own jazz interests, as you may have spotted, tend to the fusion side, but I enjoyed these. Both are/were guitarists - Emily Remler died very young.
Then off down to Savannah, Georgia for the conference. An interesting, attractive city - most of the colonial era stuff is still there, and it boasts the 2nd largest port on the US eastern seaboard. They kept banging on about Savannah having the second biggest St Patrick's day parade, and I kept pointing out that my home town in Ireland doesn't have one, and that Dublin's hasn't been going for all that long. Good conference, and once again some good eating/drinking out. There was a brew-pub just over the road from the hotel, with some excellent beers. There is also a restaurant owned by a sort of American Delia Smith. My US colleagues were quite excited by going there - their wives were asking them to bring back souvenirs - but they actually found it rather a disappoinment. The non-Americans among us thought it was OK - but we didn't have any greta expectations.
I was hit by toothache coming back - something I haven't had since I was a kid. Fortunately I had anti-inflammatories with me, and they kept it well under control. Got back on a saturday, so couldn't see a dentist, but the doctor gave me anti-biotics, which cleared it up, but also caused havoc with my guts, which have only just recovered a week later. saw the dentist on the Tuesday, but he couldn't see anything on the X-ray. he thinks there is/was an infection under a filling, which will probably come back some time, and when it does he wants to see me before I take antibiotics or anti-inflammatories. Lovely!
Another jazz cd given to me (by daughter's boyfriend) - fusion this time, so a bit more to my taste:
Obviously lots of reading during the trip, most of which I have already posted, but I also finished this recently:
It's the sequel to "Scar Night", and probably a better book.
